Last week my wife gave birth to our wonderful baby boy.  Over the next few weeks I will be running around trying to keep up with hysteria of life while trying to not fall behind on my work.

As a result, Shomer Shekalim will not have any regular updates for the next couple of weeks.  I look foreword to returning to regular posts somewhere late July / early August.

Thank you for your understanding,

Jonathan Degani

PS – If anyone has any guest posts about any money saving tip or experience, I’d love to hear it.  Please send any guest post entries to

  6. Shekalim – some tips for your readers

#1 – The best places to get your baby gear, hands down are:
Baby Michel, and Americans from Maalot Dafna who are returning to America and don’t want to bring back the baby items they brought with them. These you find on Janglo ads and the like.

#2 – Maximize on the free stuff people will want to give you as it’s your first baby. I’m talking everything you can get for your child up to the age of three: stroller(s – 1 small for bus, 1 big for long walks), car seat(s – jr. & sr.), high chair, pack ‘n play, crib, clothes for ages (don’t forget the older ages!), bouncer chair, carriers, carry cot — many people you know have these things lying around not doing anything as they are short-term use items with long life. Again, during the first few months of your first baby’s life people are very generous, allocate and get everything you will need now or you will end up paying for it when you need them, big purchases every few months…

#3 – Don’t cheap out on diapers, bottles, or sippy cups, Huggies and Avent brands are the best available here. Leaks (your clothes, couches, cell phones in purses with bottles…) and poop stains will happen no matter what, and should be minimized, with G-d’s help.
